Shashi B. Verma
Research Associate Professor
Dr. Shashi Verma is an aerospace scientist specializing in the area of advanced rocket nozzles, nozzle flow separation and side-loads, control of shock-wave boundary-layer interaction and jet mixing and noise control. In April 2012, he has been appointed as a research faculty at University of Central Florida and is an affiliated scientist to the Florida Space Institute.
Dr. Verma was formerly a research scientist in the Institute of Space Propulsion, DLR Lampoldshausen, Germany from 2001 to 2003. He worked on the flow phenomena in thrust nozzles of rocket main engines and was a well-respected member of the French/German /Swedish research initiative “Flow Separation Control Devices (FSCD)”. During his time at DLR he carried out basic research on a nozzle concept called “dual bell” which is of specific interest for 2 ½ stage launchers such as the European Ariane 5 or the Japanese H-2A. The main engines of these launchers, which are ignited at sea level but operate much longer than the classical booster engines, would profit from altitude compensating nozzle concepts such as the dual bell nozzle. Dr. Verma carried out detailed research into the phenomena which ensures the reliable and safe operation of such engines by avoiding uncontrolled flow separation and local hot spots due to unfavorable flow reattachment.
More recently, until March 2012, he was serving as a Principal scientist in the experimental aerodynamics division of National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore India. He worked as a Principal Investigator (PI) on mutli-disciplinary topics such as jet aeroacoustics, advanced rocket nozzle studies (such as the aerospike, linear plug and dual-bell nozzles) and on flow control techniques to attenuate the adverse effects of shock-wave boundary-layer flows. He has been the Principal Investigator or a Co-Investigator in 15 aerospace related research projects in India, primarily funded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, National Aerospace Laboratories, Aeronautical research and Development Board (AR&DB), India and by the Defense Research and Development Laboratories (DRDL), Hyderabad.
Currently Dr. Verma is involved in various topics of Gas Turbine related research at the Center for Advanced Turbine and Energy Research (CATER) in collaboration with Prof. Jay Kapat, Mechanical Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE), UCF. His work is focused on cooling techniques for Gas Turbines and those related to rocket nozzle flows.
Before receiving his doctorate in jet aero-acoustics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur in India in 1998, Dr. Verma completed his master’s degree in aerospace engineering from IIT in 1993, and then spent almost two years as a Humboldt fellow for his post-doctorate at Hyperschall technologie, Goettingen, Germany. He did his undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh India in 1990.
Dr. Verma has published over 70 technical papers including two invited papers in Journal of Aerospace Innovations (Multi-Science) and Shock Waves (Springer) and is a senior member of AIAA. He has given over 10 technical talks and guided a total of 6 PhD and Masters students in India. Additionally, he has been serving as a reviewer for various international journals such as AIAA journal, Journal of Propulsion and Power, Shock Waves.
He has been awarded Alexander von Humboldt fellowship three times – firstly, in 1999-2001 at Hyperschall Technologie Goettingen, where he worked on (i) shock-wave boundary-layer interaction studies related to re-entry bodies in Mach 9 flow with emphasis on real-gas effects and, (ii) Over-expanded Nozzle Flow and Lateral Side-Loads on Launch Vehicles; later on, in 2006 and 2010, at DLR Institute of Space Propulsion, Lampoldshausen, where his work focused on (i) Study on Dual-Bell Nozzle for Future Rocket Engine Applications and, (ii) Studies on the Stability of Dual-Bell Nozzle Transition, respectively. For his continuing research on advanced rocket nozzles in India, he has been awarded in 2010 `Excellence in Research Award’ by his research organization, NAL Bangalore.
Dr. Verma’s personal interests include running, weight training, gardening, painting and sketching. He and his loving wife Manu have two lovely daughters; they make their home in Orlando, Florida.
